Why ROV Systems Need Heavy-Duty Cable
Deep-water ROV operations place significant mechanical and environmental demands on the ROV cable. Long deployment distances increase cable tension, while repeated launching, recovery and underwater movement can expose the cable to abrasion and mechanical stress.
Our Heavy-Duty ROV Cable is designed for high-tension deep-water operations, providing the mechanical strength and durability required for demanding ROV deployments. For applications requiring additional mechanical protection, our Armoured ROV Cable uses steel wire armor to improve tensile strength and resistance to abrasion and impact.
The cable can also integrate power conductors, control cores and fiber optics according to system requirements. Depending on the ROV configuration, it can be engineered as an ROV tether or ROV umbilical cable, with the construction tailored to operating depth, tensile load and transmission requirements.

This is a typical heavy-duty armoured ROV cable that integrates power conductors, control signals, communication lines, and optical fibers. The outer layer features a double-layer galvanized steel wire armor with a coverage ratio of 90–95%. It is rated for a maximum operating depth of 2,500 meters and has a breaking strength of 250 kN.
Challenges of Deep-Sea Applications for Cables
Deep-sea cable applications involve more than simply increasing cable strength or selecting materials for underwater use.
As deployment depth and operating complexity increase, cable systems must remain reliable throughout installation, operation, retrieval, and maintenance. The main challenges come from the combination of deep-water operating conditions, hydrostatic pressure, and demanding deployment environments.
Deep-Water Operational Requirements
Deep-water cable systems often operate over long deployment distances, where recovery, inspection, and maintenance can be difficult and costly. Cable performance must therefore remain consistent throughout the entire deployment cycle while matching the requirements of ROVs, subsea monitoring systems, exploration equipment, and other underwater systems. Cable design needs to balance service life, system integration, and operational efficiency according to the actual depth and working conditions.
High Hydrostatic Pressure & Water Ingress
As deployment depth increases, hydrostatic pressure places greater demands on the cable's internal structure and protective layers. Pressure-resistant construction is particularly important for preventing water migration and maintaining the integrity of insulation, fillers, shielding, and other internal components. Cable materials and sealing methods must therefore be selected to maintain reliable performance throughout prolonged exposure to deep-sea pressure.
Mechanical Loads & Dynamic Deployment
Subsea cables may experience significant mechanical loads during deployment, retrieval, towing, and positioning. ROV operations can also introduce repeated bending, tension, twisting, and movement over extended operating cycles. The cable structure must accommodate these loads without compromising electrical performance or shortening its service life, particularly where repeated deployment and recovery are part of normal operation.
